In a speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump criticized India’s import tariffs, particularly on automobiles, claiming they exceed 100%. He announced that the US would implement reciprocal tariffs starting April 2, targeting nations that impose high tariffs on American products.
Trump voiced his frustration with long-standing trade imbimportalances, stating that countries like India, China, Brazil, and Mexico have been charging the US higher tariffs than what the US imposes in return. He promised to change the system, enforcing tariffs on other nations based on their treatment of US goods.
Addressing ongoing trade disputes, Trump emphasized that tariffs would be imposed “back and forth,” and countries that place non-monetary barriers on American exports would face similar restrictions. He also stressed that the US economy would thrive under these new measures, creating jobs and bringing in massive amounts of money.
Further discussing his administration’s achievements, Trump boasted of signing nearly 100 executive orders and taking over 400 executive actions in his first six weeks in office. He declared a “golden age” for America and criticized Democratic lawmakers for their lack of support, regardless of the US’s accomplishments. He also took aim at former President Joe Biden, labeling him as “the worst President in American history.”
Trump’s speech marked a commitment to tackling trade imbalances, enforcing tough tariffs, and securing American economic interests globally.
